Tom Cruise's latest film comes with a hefty nine-figure price tag - and the star will undergo a new transformation as part of his role in the movie.

Digger, the forthcoming Alejandro G. Iñárritu black comedy is centred on the world's most influential figure who triggers a catastrophe and sets out on a quest to demonstrate he can rescue mankind.

The flim is reportedly carrying a budget of no less than $125 million. Matthew Belloni of Puck commented: "A high-budget original Iñárritu comedy - Warners is saying it cost $125 million, but I'm already suspicious - with Tom Cruise in prosthetics.

"Basically next year's One Battle [After Another]." The production features an ensemble cast including Riz Ahmed, Emma D'Arcy, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, and Sandra Hüller.

One Battle After Another, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti, reportedly carried a budget ranging from $130 to $175 million.

Digger marks Iñárritu's return to English-language cinema, his first since his 2015 film The Revenant, which he both co-wrote and produced.

Discussing Digger previously, which initially went by the working title Judy, he shared with Deadline: "I'm so excited. It was an incredible experience with Tom, Sandra Huller, Jesse Plemmons, with Riz Ahmed, but it's a character driven film mounted on the shoulders of Tom which I knew he was exactly the right person.

"This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It's insane.

"He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director.

"I was so f****** impressed and happy. He gives himself.

"He has an incredible sense of passion. It's a brutal comedy. It's a wild comedy of human nature. It's scary and funny. It's beautiful.

"It was a very challenging film, you will see. It's many borders of many things.

"Every film challenges me. I don't like doing things that I've done already. This is something that we've never done and it's exciting as well."
