Shona McGarty is among the ten famous faces who have entered the jungle

I'm A Celebrity star's family share 'concerns' during jungle stint

Shona McGarty's family have now spoken out

Shona McGarty's relatives have rallied behind her as she faces Ant and Dec's gruelling bushtucker trials on the ITV programme.

The former EastEnders star has entered the jungle alongside the likes of Alex Scott, Martin Kemp, Ruby Wax and Eddie Kadi, and has revealed the challenges she's confronting.

Shona, 34, became emotional whilst discussing her anxiety with fellow campmates. She said: "I'm emotional already. I'm just really happy to be here too."

As she wiped away tears, she admitted: "If we are being really open and honest, I just really don't want my anxiety to ruin it. It is really going to be a good experience.", reports the Express.

Her mum and sister have now featured on Lorraine to show their backing for her, whilst acknowledging their worries.

When questioned if they were concerned about how she would manage in the jungle, Shona's sister said: "Yes and no, because she does suffer a little bit with anxiety and she's a bit more reserved and shy when she meets new people.

"When she gets to know everybody and see who gets her sense of humour and who she naturally gels with, I think she'll really come out of her shell."

After Shona departed EastEnders following 15 years portraying Whitney Dean. Her mum said: "She'd had such a long career in EastEnders. Since she was 16, she's known nothing else. And it's a brave move, she wanted to do other things and see what she could do."

Her mum expressed her hopes that viewers will now see the real Shona and added: "She's a bit of a slow burner, when she meets people, she's quite shy."

When asked if they were concerned about how she'd handle facing her fears, particularly in water-based challenges, Shona's sister said: "Yes and no, but I was still voting for her to do it last night. Chuck her in, give her the full experience, she knows why she's there, so face your fears!".

Her mum added: "When she relaxes a bit more and eases into it, she'll start being Shona.

"It's hard to quite describe Shona if you don't know her, she definitely isn't Whitney, she's so far removed."

Her sister added: "She has social anxiety, but that's one part of her. It's like having a friend that you meet at a party that you associate with, you bump into them every now and again, but it's not the whole of her."

Before participating in I'm A Celebrity, Shona candidly discussed her mental health struggles, revealing that hiding her feelings as a young performer in the spotlight had been challenging but she now benefits from medication and therapy.

She told The Sun newspaper: "It's been horrible. It's been quite hard sometimes, and I'm sure a lot of people can relate.

"Being in an industry at such a young age, when people ask you, 'Are you OK?', you have to say you're fine. That was the way I was taught. You just say, 'fine' and you fake it till you make it, kind of thing.

"But that can take its toll on you, and I think it did. I've had a little bit of therapy, I take anxiety and depression medication, which has really helped me."

I'm A Celebrity continues tonight at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX. Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV1 and ITVX.
